The benefits of meal prepping

With many of us now working from home and with more time on our hands thanks to no lengthy commutes, is meal-prepping still worth the hassle? Trust us, there are so many more benefits to meal-prepping than the time it’ll save you. We caught up with The Meal Prep King himself, John Clark, and asked him to share the key reasons why he meal preps and the benefits this routine could offer you too!


We’ve all been there. You’re trying your best to stick to your diet or simply attempting to eat a little healthier than usual. But, in a bid to get back to the office as fast as possible or with little time to spare during a jam-packed day of work from home video calls, you’ve grabbed the quickest, most convenient thing to curb those stomach rumbles. Often, when we’re unprepared, we reach for fast food options that are (clue’s in the name) fast, but often full of unhealthy saturated fats, sugar and calories. Meal prepping puts you in control. You can carefully craft your meals for the week, whether that’s your lunch during the working day or preparing a healthy breakfast to kick-start your morning. This control enables you to make healthier choices rather than reaching for whatever’s convenient.

“I find if I have a fridge or freezer full of prepped meals, I am less likely to order a takeaway or make something out of a pre-packaged box,” said John, “When you meal prep, you’re in total control of what goes in that container!”


One of the many benefits of meal-prepping is reduced food wastage. Many people choose to prep their meals then freeze them – depending on what food you prep, meals can last between 1-3 months in the freezer and up to 3 days in the fridge. So, if you’re keen to cut back on food wastage, pop your leftovers or any additional portions from your prep into the freezer and they’ll keep until you’re ready to enjoy them.

“Meal prepping allows you to keep food wastage to a minimum,” said John, “I tend to keep my meals in the fridge for up to 3 days maximum and it still tastes as fresh as when I originally cooked it.”


Tempted to order a takeaway? Are your cravings causing you to consider binging on that tasty junk-food treat your other half has cruelly left in the kitchen right under your nose? Meal prepping is sure to help ease those temptations, as you’ll have put in far too much time and effort to ditch your healthy, pre-prepared meals.

The Meal Prep King recommends you make your prepped meals as varied as possible to keep them fresh and exciting – this will help keep you on track.

“Veggies are great for meal prep – not only are they good for you, but there are so many different varieties and they add so much colour to your meals. Packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, veggies are a must for all prepped meals.

“Home-made soups, thickened up with peas, lentils and veggies, are also a great shout and freeze really well.”


Now, the initial process of meal prepping many seem time consuming, especially if you’re planning on prepping for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but the time spent up front will free up precious time during the week. Busy day at work? You can rest assured that once your day is done, you have a healthy, nutritious meal ready to go. Or maybe you’re busy getting the kids' dinner sorted and always seem to leave yourself till last. Gone are those evenings spent reaching for a convenient bowl of sugary cereal – head to the fridge or freezer and they’ll be a choice of delicious meals to choose from. What’s not to love?!
